Food waste and social solutions

As much as half of all food produced in the world ends up as waste each year, according to a new report by the UK's Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The institution blames the overwhelming level of waste on unnecessarily strict sell-by dates, buy-one-get-one free offers and western consumer demand for cosmetically perfect food, as well as poor engineering, agricultural practices, inadequate infrastructure and poor storage facilities.

2012 Social Enterprise Review

2012 was a great year for arc as we supported over 30 new social enterprises, celebrated our first year anniversary and expanded our programme to West London, enabling us to create 2,000 jobs in the capital by 2016.

UnLtd and the Big Lottery Fund launch new Big Venture Challenge

Ambitious, high potential, social entrepreneurs will have the chance to raise investment with the unveiling of the next phase of the Big Venture Challenge, an investment readiness programme from UnLtd and the Big Lottery Fund.

The new Big Venture Challenge will, over the next three years, help 100 early stage social enterprises secure at least 5m of external investment, by providing 5m in match funding and expert business support for successful applicants over a 12 month period.
